The 2022 American Buffalo gold coin represents a modern continuation of one of America's most celebrated numismatic designs. The coin carries no mint mark, though it was produced at the West Point facility. The reverse features a powerful American Buffalo standing in profile. This majestic animal design was inspired by a real bison named Black Diamond, who lived in the Central Park Zoo. The reverse is inscribed with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the mottoes E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, and the weight and purity designation of 1 oz. 0.9999 FINE GOLD. This modern gold series, which began in 2006, honors the classic imagery originally created by designer James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel.
