The 2022 Niue two dollar coin brings ancient numismatic tradition into the modern era. Struck from one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver, this piece features a unique stackable rim design, allowing multiple coins to align securely when placed on top of one another. On one side, the coin displays a detailed depiction of an owl perched upon a branch, set against a distinct hammered-texture background. This imagery, which also includes a crescent moon and an olive branch, is modeled after the classical Athenian Owl Tetradrachm. The owl has long served as an emblem of wisdom, inner fortitude, and deep insight. Alongside the nocturnal bird is the inscription AOE, representing the Latin concepts of Alethia Orno Eternia, which translate to truth, honor, and forever. The opposite side features the classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Ian Rank-Broadley.
