2022-P Wilma Mankiller Women's Quarter BU
In 2022, the United States Mint initiated a celebratory coin series running from 2022 to 2025 to recognize the achievements of pioneering American women. Up to five distinct reverse designs are released annually during this period. This brilliant uncirculated twenty-five cent piece, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, honors Wilma Mankiller, a monumental figure in modern tribal leadership. The reverse of the coin presents a striking portrait of Wilma Mankiller enveloped in a traditional shawl, depicted with the wind blowing from behind her. Set in the background is the seven-pointed star representing the Cherokee Nation. Mankiller made history as the first female elected to the office of deputy chief of her nation, and she subsequently achieved election as principal chief in 1987. Her profound contributions to her community and country earned her an induction into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993, followed by the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. On the obverse, the coin displays a portrait of George Washington. This particular likeness was originally sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser. The coin features legible inscriptions including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the year 2022, alongside the P mint mark representing its Philadelphia origin.
