The 2022 San Francisco minted silver dollar represents a key moment in the evolution of America's signature silver bullion series. Struck in a full troy ounce of 99.9 percent pure silver, this coin showcases the updated Type 2 reverse design, which was first introduced to celebrate the thirty-fifth anniversary of the coin program. Out of a total mintage of 200,000 pieces for this San Francisco proof issue, a select group of 15,000 coins was distributed prior to the public launch, earning them a special early designation. On the front of the coin, the classic depiction of Lady Liberty strides forward, a timeless image originally created by Adolph A. Weinman. The reverse side features a detailed bald eagle landing while clutching an oak branch, a modern design created by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso. This dynamic eagle replaced the original heraldic design by John Mercanti, which had been utilized from 1986 until the first half of 2021.
