This 2022 quarter from the San Francisco Mint celebrates Wilma Mankiller, a monumental figure who made history as the first female deputy chief and subsequent principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Her legacy of leadership and advocacy earned her an induction into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993, followed by the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. This coin is part of a multiyear initiative running from 2022 to 2025 that highlights the vital achievements of women in the history and evolution of the United States. The reverse side of the coin presents a powerful portrait of Mankiller looking forward with determination, her traditional shawl wrapped around her as the wind blows from behind. The background displays the symbolic seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. Legible inscriptions on this side include her name, WILMA MANKILLER, along with her title, PRINCIPAL CHIEF, and the traditional Cherokee Nation spelling. The mint mark S is clearly visible, denoting its origin at the San Francisco Mint. On the obverse, the coin displays a portrait of George Washington that differs from the likeness used in earlier quarter series. This particular depiction of the first president was originally created and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser.
