The Krugerrand holds a pioneering position in modern coinage. Initially introduced in 1967, this iconic series from the South African Mint was the very first modern gold bullion coin ever produced. Unlike most legal tender, these coins have never been assigned a specific face value. Instead, their worth is directly tied to the prevailing market price of their precious metal content. This 2022 issue is struck in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, containing one tenth of an ounce of pure gold within a durable alloy of 91.67 percent gold and copper. The copper component gives the coin its classic, warm, and highly durable reddish hue, a signature characteristic of the series since its inception. The obverse of the coin displays the profile of Paul Kruger, who served as the first and only president of the South African Republic. Surrounding his portrait, the name of the issuing nation is inscribed in both Afrikaans and English, reading as SOUTH AFRICA. On the reverse, a dynamic springbok antelope, the beloved national animal of South Africa, bounds across the landscape. The reverse design also displays the 2022 year of minting, split on either side of the central image, alongside inscriptions indicating the weight in both English and Afrikaans, including FYNGOUD and FINE GOLD.
