In 1967, a new concept in coinage emerged that would transform how the world interacted with precious metals. The Krugerrand debuted as the pioneer of modern gold bullion, created specifically to align its value directly with the fluctuating market price of the metal itself. Struck by the South African Mint on behalf of the South African Reserve Bank, this series established a global standard that continues today. This 2022 edition contains exactly one half ounce of pure gold content within its durable alloy. The obverse side features a detailed portrait of Paul Kruger, the inaugural president of South Africa. Surrounding his likeness, the name of the issuing nation is inscribed in both English and Afrikaans, reading SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. On the reverse, a springbok antelope bounds across the African landscape. This side of the coin also displays the 2022 production year alongside bilingual inscriptions noting the weight of the fine gold, including the Afrikaans term FYNGOUD.
