It represents the sixth entry in the celebrated Sioux Buffalo series, which first debuted in 2015 to honor the legacy and traditions of Native American peoples. On the front of the coin, two Sioux chiefs are depicted navigating a canoe in the waters near Elk Park Falls, located in North Carolina. Both figures are shown wearing elaborate, traditional feathered headdresses. The surrounding inscriptions emphasize the sovereign status of the issuing nation, displaying the words SOVEREIGN NATION, LAKOTA, OGLALA, and SIOUX, alongside the face value of ONE DOLLAR, the year 2023, and the metal weight and purity.
