The Chinese Gold Panda series has captivated observers around the globe since its debut in 1982. A distinctive feature of these coins is their evolving artwork, which showcases a new depiction of the giant panda nearly every year. The only exception to this rule occurred in 2002, when the design remained the same as the previous year, before the practice of annual updates resumed in 2003. Another major milestone occurred in 2016, when the series transitioned from the traditional troy ounce system to metric measurements. As part of this shift, the 15 gram weight replaced the traditional half-ounce option. On the reverse of the 2023 issue, two young pandas, a brother and sister, are depicted scaling a tree together. This side also displays the 200 Yuan face value, alongside the weight of 15 grams and the 0.999 gold purity. The People's Bank of China guarantees the metal content and weight of these issues. The obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a famous structure located within Beijing's Temple of Heaven complex. Surrounding this architectural landmark is the Chinese inscription for the People's Republic of China, with the 2023 year of issue positioned at the bottom. Production of these coins takes place across multiple facilities, including mints in Shanghai, Shenyang, Beijing, and Shenzhen. While these facilities typically do not employ mint marks, certain years have occasionally included the letters Y or S to denote the origin.
