2023-P Native American $1 - Maria Tallchief BU
This brilliant uncirculated dollar coin from the Philadelphia Mint celebrates the remarkable legacy of Maria Tallchief, a trailblazing figure who rose to prominence as the first major prima ballerina from the United States. The reverse of the coin captures Tallchief in a dynamic ballet pose, surrounded by a group of dancers and symbolic moons. This design pays tribute to the Five Moons, a group of five distinguished Native American ballerinas that included Tallchief. The obverse features the familiar portrait of Sacagawea looking toward the right as she carries her young son on her back. This side carries the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, the inscriptions read MARIA TALLCHIEF, AMERICAN INDIANS, $1, and BALLET, alongside UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck from a unique alloy consisting of 77 percent copper, 12 percent zinc, 7 percent manganese, and 4 percent nickel, this coin also features edge lettering. Incused along the edge are the year 2023, the P mint mark representing the Philadelphia Mint, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
