Unlike standard circulating issues, this coin is struck as a proof, a method that highlights the sharp details and contrasting surfaces of the artwork. Production was limited to a mintage of 400,000 pieces. The obverse displays a left-facing profile of Liberty, adorned with a crown of sharp, radiant light rays. This classic portrait, originally created by Anthony de Francisci, includes the designer's personal monogram, the letters AF, positioned near the bottom of the design.
