This modern silver coin marks a major archaeological milestone, celebrating one century since the opening of Tutankhamun's final resting place. Discovered in 1922 and opened in 1923, the ancient tomb belonged to the young pharaoh who ascended the throne of Egypt's 18th dynasty at just nine or ten years of age, starting his rule in 1332 B.C. One side of the coin presents a striking, front-facing depiction of King Tut's famous golden death mask, surrounded by ancient hieroglyphics and the one-dollar denomination. The other side displays the national crest of the Republic of Sierra Leone alongside the 2023 year of issue, set against a frosted background that also incorporates Egyptian hieroglyphs.
