The 2023 five-dollar gold piece represents a modern chapter in one of the most celebrated coin programs from the United States. Struck at the West Point Mint with a proof finish, this tenth-ounce coin is composed of 0.9167 fine gold, alloyed with silver and copper for durability. The issue continues a legacy authorized by Congress that first debuted in 1986. On the obverse, viewers can appreciate a meticulously updated rendition of the iconic Lady Liberty design originally created in 1907. This version restores subtle details from the historic model, showing Liberty as she strides forward with an olive branch in one hand and a lit torch in the other. The reverse displays a striking, close-up profile of an eagle. Unveiled as part of the series update in 2021, this design by Jennie Norris was sculpted by Renata Gordon. It marked the very first major design change for the reverse since the program started in 1986, replacing the original family of eagles motif with this intimate wildlife portrait.
