The 2023-W Proof Gold Buffalo represents a continuation of a landmark series for the United States Mint. First introduced in 2006, this series marked the very first time the U.S. government released bullion coins composed of 0.9999 fine gold. This particular 50 dollar coin contains one troy ounce of pure gold, backed as official sovereign currency by the United States. Struck at the West Point Mint, this coin features a proof finish. Unlike standard circulating coinage, proof pieces are struck multiple times on specially prepared metal blanks, resulting in a mirror-like background that contrasts beautifully with the frosted design elements. The United States Mint limited the 2023 offering to a mintage of 16,000 coins. The artwork on both sides of the coin is adapted from the famous 1913 Buffalo Nickel designed by James Earle Fraser. The obverse features a powerful profile portrait of a Native American, accompanied by the inscription LIBERTY, the year 2023, and the W mint mark. The reverse showcases a majestic American buffalo standing in profile, an image believed to be modeled after a famous bison named Black Diamond. Legible inscriptions on the reverse include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the weight and purity designation of 1 OZ. 0.9999 FINE GOLD.
