The collection honors the core freedoms protected by the First Amendment, using the developmental stages of an oak tree as a visual metaphor for the strength and growth of the nation. For the 2023 edition, the focus turns to the Freedom of the Press, celebrating its role in a free society. On the obverse, an oak branch laden with acorns is depicted alongside the meaningful inscription, "WITH FREEDOM OF THE PRESS LIBERTY BEARS FRUIT." This side of the coin was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Joseph Menna. The reverse, designed by Patricia Lucas-Morris and sculpted by Don Everhart, features a soaring eagle clutching an olive branch in its talons.
