The 2024 tenth-ounce American Gold Eagle represents a beautiful bridge between different eras of American coin design. Struck in 0.9167 fine gold, this five-dollar denomination coin is guaranteed by the United States Mint as part of a prestigious bullion program that began in 1986. Despite its small size, containing exactly one-tenth of a troy ounce of pure gold, the coin carries an incredible level of detail and artistic depth. On the obverse, the coin displays the iconic figure of Lady Liberty moving forward with strength and grace. She holds a lit torch in one hand to light the way and an olive branch in the other, representing peace. This legendary imagery is adapted from the famous double eagle twenty-dollar gold piece that circulated from 1907 to 1933, originally created by the celebrated sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse side of the coin brings a modern perspective to American coinage with a detailed portrait of a bald eagle. Created by artist Jennie Norris in 2021, this close-up design captures the fierce, majestic gaze of the national bird.
