The 2024 release of the Australian Gold Kangaroo series presents a striking snapshot of the Australian outback, rendered in a quarter ounce of 0.9999 fine gold. On the reverse side, a single kangaroo is captured mid-motion, preparing to leap across a dry creek bed. In the background, a traditional windmill and a water storage tank complete the rural scene. This side of the coin also features the word KANGAROO, the 2024 year of issue, and a unique P125 mint mark, which celebrates the anniversary of the Perth Mint. The obverse side marks a significant transition, displaying the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne. Surrounding the royal effigy are inscriptions denoting the monarch's name, the issuing nation of Australia, and the face value of 25 Dollars. This coin carries official legal tender status in Australia, backed by the authority of the Perth Mint, with a maximum production limit of 150,000 pieces. While this series is famous today for its annual depiction of the iconic marsupial, it actually began in 1986 under a different theme. For the first few years of its existence, the series showcased famous gold nuggets. The design focus shifted permanently to the kangaroo in 1989, establishing a beloved tradition where a brand-new illustration of the animal is created for each annual release.
