The Austrian Mint has created a fascinating tribute to ocean ecosystems with its 2024 three-euro coin dedicated to the blue doctorfish. Part of the innovative Luminous Marine Life series, this cupro-nickel piece captures the vibrant energy of coral reefs. The coin is struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standards, with a total mintage limited to 65,000 pieces. The reverse of the coin features a detailed porthole frame that looks out onto a lively underwater scene. A mature blue doctorfish swims alongside coral formations and two smaller, yellow juvenile doctorfish. In a remarkable feat of modern minting technology, the main doctorfish glows in shades of green and blue when exposed to ultraviolet light, mimicking the natural luminescence found in the depths of the sea. On the obverse, the coin displays a collective celebration of marine biodiversity. It features the silhouettes of 12 different sea creatures navigating through rising air bubbles, accompanied by a fading tail fin.
