This exceptional silver coin from 2024 transports observers back to the medieval defenses of the Netherlands. Struck in a brilliant proof finish, the piece belongs to a dedicated series celebrating historic Dutch city gates and their approach roads. The coin contains 0.7929 troy ounces of 0.999 fine silver, with the entire issue limited to a mintage of just 1,750 pieces. The obverse features Duke Karel van Egmond standing resolutely before Helpoort, the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands. Built in 1229 after Duke Hendrik I of Brabant authorized its construction, this imposing structure is also known by historical names such as Jekerpoort, Hoogbruggepoort, and De Twee Torens. Its most famous name, Helpoort, translates directly to 'Hell Gate.' Over the centuries, the gate transitioned from a vital defensive fortification to an arsenal, a storage facility for gunpowder, and even a private residence. On the coin, the Duke holds a shield displaying the provincial arms of Limburg, surrounded by a Latin inscription abbreviated as MO.NO.ARG.REG.BELGII.LIMB, which translates to 'New Silver coin of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Limburg.' On the reverse, the official coat of arms of the Netherlands is displayed beneath the Royal Crown, which sits positioned between the digits of the year 2024. The traditional Latin motto CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT, meaning 'Unity makes Strength,' circles the design. The reverse also displays the official mint mark and privy mark, serving as a guarantee of authenticity from the Royal Dutch Mint.
