The South African Mint introduces the third chapter of its celebrated wildlife series with the 2024 gold proof elephant coin. Originally launched in 2019, this ongoing numismatic program honors the iconic animal species closely associated with Southern Africa, specifically the elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, and buffalo. Following the conclusion of the second series that began in 2021, this 2024 issue marks the very first release of Series III. Struck from one troy ounce of 0.9999 pure gold, the coin features a beautifully detailed obverse depicting a single elephant with its trunk raised high. Alongside this central figure, the design incorporates the South African coat of arms and the text South Africa and Big Five 2024. The reverse of the coin offers a clever visual experience, showcasing two halves of an elephant's face. When multiple coins are placed side by side, a complete herd of elephants begins to form. Legible inscriptions on this side include the face value of Fifty Rand and the metal specifications of one ounce of 0.9999 fine gold. With a highly restricted mintage of only 500 pieces, this proof coin is a remarkable celebration of South African natural heritage.
