Each piece carries the official backing of the United States government. On the obverse, a classic depiction of Lady Liberty strides forward carrying a lit torch and an olive branch. This iconic imagery, originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, first graced the twenty-dollar Gold Double Eagle in 1907.
