2025 AUS 1 oz Silver Pillar Dollar Antiqued (Box, COA)
This intriguing silver release from the Perth Mint honors a critical moment in early Australian history, marking the 225th anniversary of the historic 1800 proclamation by Governor King. Faced with a severe shortage of circulating money in the colony of New South Wales, the governor issued an edict to regulate foreign coins. This crisis was later addressed further when Governor Macquarie imported 40,000 Spanish silver pieces, transforming them into the famous local 'holey dollars' and 'dumps' to establish the very first currency struck on Australian soil. The reverse of this modern one dollar coin meticulously recreates the iconic Spanish Pillar Dollar, historically known as a peso or 'piece of eight'. At its center, two crowned globes representing the Old and New Worlds sit beneath the Spanish Crown, accompanied by the Latin inscription 'VTRAQUE', meaning 'both are one'. Flanking the hemispheres are the majestic Pillars of Hercules, wrapped in banners that display the phrase 'PLVS VLTA', translating to 'more beyond'. To honor its historical origins, the design incorporates the ornamental 'Mo' mint mark of Mexico City alongside the modern 'P' mint mark of the Perth Mint and the year 2025. Struck from one troy ounce of 99.99 percent pure silver, each piece features a specialized antiqued finish that lends an aged, historic character to the detailed surfaces. The obverse displays the modern effigy of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne, alongside inscriptions detailing the weight, the high silver purity, and the one dollar legal tender denomination. With a restricted mintage of only 2,500 pieces, this coin offers a fascinating window into the global trade networks that shaped Australia's early economy.
