This proclamation established official values for various foreign coins already in circulation, a system later adapted by Governor Macquarie when he famously transformed Spanish silver pieces into local 'holey dollars' and 'dumps' to create Australia's first official minted currency. The reverse of this proof coin pays tribute to the iconic Spanish Pillar Dollar, a dominant global trade currency of the era. The design features the crowned Spanish coat of arms flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, which are wrapped in banners bearing the Latin phrase 'PLVS VLTA', translating to 'more beyond'.
