The American Women Quarters series, which spans the years 2022 to 2025, celebrates influential women who shaped history. This particular 2025 release from the Philadelphia Mint shines a spotlight on the pioneering astronomer Dr. Vera Rubin. Struck in brilliant uncirculated condition, this copper-based quarter captures a fascinating intersection of science and art, rendering monumental cosmic discoveries on a small metal canvas. On the reverse side, the design honors Dr. Rubin's legacy with a depiction of a vast spiral galaxy alongside other celestial bodies. The inscriptions on this side clearly define her scientific focus, featuring her name, DR. VERA RUBIN, alongside the phrase DARK MATTER, which refers to the invisible substance she helped prove exists. The traditional national inscriptions, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, also frame this cosmic scene. The obverse of the quarter carries a historic portrait of George Washington. Originally sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser, this depiction of the first president faces right, accompanied by the inscriptions IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the year 2025, and the P mint mark representing its Philadelphia origin.
