The historic vessel was originally launched on May 7, 1765, following its construction at Chatham Dockyard under the design direction of Sir Thomas Slade. Decades later, the ship would secure its place in naval lore by serving as the flagship for Vice Admiral Lord Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The obverse design captures the majestic vessel under full sail, set against the backdrop of a stylized compass.
