The obverse showcases a remastered version of Arnold Machin's iconic depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Originally created to help the public differentiate upcoming decimal coinage from older pre decimal issues, this specific portrait is the second official likeness of the Queen to appear on the nation's currency. Chief Engraver Gordon Summers undertook the task of remastering this classic image for the modern era. To achieve a look that balanced charm and dignity without falling into sentimentality, the design process was highly collaborative and involved extensive preparation. Queen Elizabeth II sat for Machin on four separate occasions, allowing the artist to develop his vision through initial sketches and clay models. The Duke of Edinburgh also participated in the design process, offering input along the way. In contrast to the historic tribute on the obverse, the reverse of this official legal tender coin features the contemporary effigy of King Charles III.
