This British five-pound coin serves as a stunning tribute to the very first coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Originally crafted by Mary Gillick in 1952, this iconic depiction won a design competition hosted by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee. The portrait, which first appeared on circulating coinage in 1953, presents the young monarch adorned with a traditional laurel wreath. For this modern release, Chief Engraver Gordon Summers remastered the historic artwork to bring its delicate details to life for contemporary observers. As part of the Portraits of a Queen series, the coin bridges two eras of British monarchy. The obverse displays the remastered Gillick portrait alongside the inscription PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN and the active years of the effigy. In contrast, the reverse side features the current likeness of King Charles III, along with the 2026 issue year and the five-pound face value. This official United Kingdom legal tender is struck in 0.23 ounces of cupro-nickel and is presented in brilliant uncirculated condition.
