This modern silver proof coin from Niue pays tribute to one of the most famous rarities in numismatic history. Issued as the fifth release in The Greatest United States Coins series, this two-ounce coin of 0.999 fine silver reimagines a landmark design. Backed by the government of Niue with a face value of Five Dollars, this issue is limited to a global mintage of just 500 pieces. The imagery on this coin is modeled after the 1849 Liberty Head Double Eagle, which holds the distinction of being the initial twenty-dollar gold coin authorized and produced by the United States Mint. Created by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, the original gold piece was an experimental, transitional issue prompted by the massive influx of gold during the California Gold Rush. Only two specimens of that historic 1849 gold coin were ever struck. The obverse of this silver issue showcases a portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet that displays the word LIBERTY. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle is depicted holding a shield. The coin combines historical American design elements with modern minting standards, offering a window into the pivotal events of the mid nineteenth century.
