The three-dollar denomination occupies a highly unusual space in the story of United States coinage. This particular gold piece, preserved in a certified Mint State 63 condition, showcases a distinct design that sets it apart from more common denominations of its era. The front of the coin features a detailed depiction of an Indian Princess, her hair swept back and curling gently over her neck. On the reverse, the design presents a decorative wreath encircling the coin's face value and the specific year it was struck. These United States Mint issues were produced across multiple historic minting facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Dahlonega, and San Francisco. Composed of 90 percent pure gold, each coin contains 0.1451 troy ounces of precious metal. Over the years, many of these coins were melted down, significantly reducing the number of surviving specimens and making those that remain particularly intriguing to study.
