35% Silver War Nickels $2 Face Value BU
35% Silver War Nickels $2 Face Value BU
During a period of global conflict, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. These wartime issues, struck with a purity of 35 percent silver, represent a fascinating departure from the traditional nickel alloy. This specific group of coins is preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, showcasing the original luster and sharp details of a design that became an enduring part of American coinage. The obverse of the coin displays a classic portrait of Thomas Jefferson, facing left, accompanied by the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" alongside the 1945 date. On the reverse, viewers can admire the detailed depiction of Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate. This side also features the traditional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "FIVE CENTS", and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". A highly unusual feature of these wartime silver nickels is the placement and size of the mint mark. To easily distinguish these silver-alloy coins from standard nickel issues, a large mint mark was placed prominently on the reverse, positioned directly above the dome of Monticello. This distinctive placement, which includes the "S" mark for the San Francisco Mint on these 1945 specimens, is a unique characteristic specific to the wartime issues, making them an intriguing study for anyone exploring twentieth-century coinage.
