Between 1908 and 1929, the United States Mint produced a highly unusual five dollar gold piece that challenged traditional coining methods. Created by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, this half eagle features an incuse design, meaning the details are recessed below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This distinctive artistic approach gives the coin a remarkably flat profile and a tactile quality unlike almost any other American coinage. The front of the coin displays a detailed profile of a Native American man wearing a traditional feathered war bonnet. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word Liberty placed along the upper rim and the year of issue stamped below. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle stands proudly on a bundle of arrows, clutching an olive branch. The surrounding inscriptions include the issuing nation, United States of America, the denomination of Five Dollars, and the traditional mottos E Pluribus Unum and In God We Trust. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, each coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. These historic pieces were struck at several different branch mints, including Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Because these coins circulated widely in commerce, surviving examples today often show signs of past cleaning or evidence of having been used in jewelry, adding a unique personal history to each surviving piece.
