The United States five dollar gold coin, minted between 1908 and 1929, represents a radical departure from traditional coin minting. Unlike typical coins where the design stands out in relief, this gold piece features an incuse design, meaning the details are recessed below the flat surface of the coin. This unusual technique gives the coin a completely flat profile and a distinct tactile feel. The obverse displays a profile of Liberty wearing a traditional feathered headdress. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY inscribed above and the year of issue below. The initials B.L.P. are also visible, honoring the designer Bela Lyon Pratt. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands amidst the classic national mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. The country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the five dollar denomination are also struck into the gold. These historic coins, struck in 0.900 fine gold with a metal content of 0.2419 troy ounces, were produced at various United States Mint locations, including Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
