The artistry of the hobo nickel represents a unique chapter in numismatic history, where individuals transformed standard coinage into miniature bas-relief sculptures. Historically, creators favored the United States Buffalo nickel, introduced in 1913, because its large Native American portrait and soft metal composition provided an ideal canvas for their creative alterations. This modern five-ounce silver round honors that tradition by replicating a highly detailed hobo nickel carving. Created as part of a 2017 collection, this round features a design by artist Roman Booteen, who drew inspiration from the famous artwork 'Knight, Death and The Devil' by Albrecht Durer. The obverse displays a knight riding on horseback through a surreal, otherworldly valley. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a haunting scene featuring a ghoulish tree wrapped in serpents, a clenched fist holding a snake, a sword, a skull, and a quiver filled with arrows. This double-obverse styled piece is struck in five troy ounces of 0.999 fine silver, with each of the 2,500 minted rounds featuring a unique serial number marked directly on its edge.
