This five-ounce silver round honors Running Antelope, a prominent nineteenth-century head chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota. Born in 1821 and living until 1896, he was celebrated for his courage in battle as well as his exceptional talents in diplomacy and public speaking. During the turbulent era of the Plains Indian Wars, he served as a key adviser to Sitting Bull. Notably, his likeness was also featured on United States paper currency, specifically the Series 1899 five-dollar Silver Certificate. The obverse of this modern silver round features a detailed portrait of Running Antelope wearing a traditional feathered headdress.
