Achaemenid Empire Gold Daric (c. 5th Century BC) AU NGC 3/4

0.2100 troy oz N/A 5th Century BC Almost Unc (NGC)

Dating back to the fifth century BC, this gold daric represents one of the earliest and most influential gold coinages in human history. Originally introduced under the rule of Darius the Great of Persia, these pieces circulated widely from 522 BC until 330 BC. The coin weighs 8.37 grams and measures 14 millimeters in diameter, containing 0.2100 troy ounces of gold. The obverse of the coin features a striking depiction of a kneeling king or heroic figure, captured in mid-stride while holding both a bow and a spear. In contrast to the detailed royal imagery on the front, the reverse displays a simple, deep oblong incuse punch, a characteristic mark of ancient minting techniques from this era. This certified specimen offers a direct look at the currency that once fueled trade and military campaigns across the ancient world.
