Achaemenid Empire Silver Siglos (480-330 BC) Fine

0.0000 troy oz N/A 480-330 BC Fine

Dating from a period between 480 and 330 BC, this silver siglos represents the coinage of the ancient Achaemenid Empire. These ancient silver pieces circulated widely throughout the Persian Empire, serving as a standard of trade and a physical manifestation of imperial authority across vast territories. The obverse of the coin displays a striking depiction of the Persian hero king. He is shown in an active stance, advancing forward while holding a bow. This royal archer motif was a powerful symbol of the empire's military strength and leadership. In contrast to the detailed royal imagery on the front, the reverse features a simple, deep oblong incuse punch. This irregular indentation is a characteristic mark of the ancient minting process, where a hand-struck die forced the silver planchet into a rough counter-mold. Each coin, preserved in Fine condition, carries its own unique shape and texture from this hand-hammered production.
