In the ancient world, the Achaemenid Empire established a powerful presence across the Near East, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable art and administration. Among their most enduring physical remnants are the silver coins known as the Siglos. Struck between 480 and 330 BC, these ancient silver pieces served as a standard medium of exchange throughout the vast Persian territories, carrying the authority of the empire into distant marketplaces. The obverse of this silver coin features a depiction of the Persian hero king. He is shown in an active stance, advancing forward while holding a bow, a powerful symbol of royal authority and military prowess in the ancient Near East. This dynamic image offers a rare glimpse into the self-image of the Persian monarchy during the height of its imperial power. In contrast to the detailed royal imagery on the front, the reverse of the coin is remarkably minimalist. It features a single, oblong incuse punch, a characteristic mark of early minting techniques where a hand-held die was driven into the hot metal.
