Achaemenid Persia Gold AV Daric (5th Century BC) XF NGC (3/4)
Dating back to the fifth century BC, this ancient gold coin is a remarkable survivor from the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Known as a Daric, this currency type was first established under the rule of Darius the Great. These pieces served as a primary medium of exchange across the ancient world from 522 BC until the empire fell in 330 BC, facilitating trade and military payments far beyond the borders of Persia. Struck from approximately 0.2000 troy ounces of gold, each coin weighs about 8.34 grams. The obverse side displays a stylized depiction of a kneeling monarch or heroic figure, captured in mid-stride holding both a bow and a spear. This iconic imagery earned these coins the popular nickname of archers in antiquity. The reverse side of the coin showcases the primitive minting technology of the era, featuring a simple, deep oblong incuse punch mark rather than a detailed artistic design. This specimen has survived the millennia with an Extra Fine grading, offering a tangible connection to the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds.
