0.0000 troy oz 275-215 BC Very Fine (NGC)

In the ancient world, the city of Syracuse on the island of Sicily was a powerful hub of commerce and culture. During the long reign of Hieron II, which spanned from circa 275 to 215 BC, the city issued bronze coinage that circulated widely. This bronze AE Unit represents a tangible connection to that Hellenistic era, surviving today in Very Fine condition. The obverse of the coin features the profile of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, looking toward the left. On the reverse, his legendary three-pronged spear, the trident, serves as the central design element. These bronze pieces vary in weight, typically ranging from 5.5 to 8.4 grams, showcasing the hand-struck nature of coinage from this period.
