Arabia Felix. Himyarites AR Fraction (c. 1st Century AD) Fine NGC
In the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula, a distinctive silver coinage circulated during the first century AD. This ancient silver fraction, minted in the territory of the Himyarites in modern day Yemen, reflects a fascinating blend of regional artistry and classical Mediterranean motifs. The area, known historically as Arabia Felix, produced these intriguing pieces which researchers sometimes attribute to the Sabaeans. One side of this small silver piece displays the right facing profile of Athena wearing a helmet, all enclosed within a delicate border of pellets. On the other side, an owl stands positioned directly on top of an amphora, with a decorative wreath encircling the entire central design. This specimen has survived the centuries to be certified in Fine condition, offering a tangible connection to the ancient trade routes of the Arabian peninsula.
