Among the most recognizable coins of the ancient world, this silver tetradrachm from Athens represents the height of classical Greek influence. Minted between 440 and 404 BC, the coin features the helmeted head of Athena on its obverse, facing right. Her crested Attic helmet is adorned with delicate olive leaves and a palmette, complemented by a round earring. The reverse depicts the famous owl of Athens, standing three-quarters to the right with its head turned fully forward to meet the viewer's gaze. Tucked behind the owl are a small olive sprig and a crescent moon, all framed within a distinct incuse square. The Greek letters alpha, theta, and epsilon are inscribed alongside the owl, representing the city of Athens. Struck in silver and certified in Almost Uncirculated condition, this specific specimen bears a physical test cut. These deep marks were made in antiquity by merchants or officials to verify the purity of the silver, offering a direct tangible link to the practical daily commerce of ancient Greece.
