Athens AR Tetradrachm Owl (440-404 BC) VF (Ex Jewelry)
Dating back to the golden age of Athens between 440 and 404 BC, this silver tetradrachm from the region of Attica represents one of the most recognizable designs of antiquity. The coin is a physical connection to the ancient Greek world, minted during a period of immense cultural and political influence. On the obverse side, the profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, is rendered wearing a crested helmet decorated with olive leaves. The reverse features her sacred companion, an owl, standing three-quarters to the right with its head turned directly toward the viewer. Accompanying the owl is a small olive sprig and a crescent moon, all framed within a distinct, recessed incuse square. The reverse also bears the Greek letters "A O E", representing the people of Athens. Struck from silver, this particular specimen is graded Very Fine, though it bears small mounting holes that suggest it was once cherished as a piece of personal jewelry in the past.
