Athens AR Tetradrachm Owl (440-404 BC) VF (Test Cut)
Among the most recognizable coins of antiquity, this silver tetradrachm from Athens represents the height of classical Greek influence. Minted during the golden age of Attica between 440 and 404 BC, these heavy silver pieces circulated widely throughout the ancient Mediterranean. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, offering a remarkably clear window into the artistry of the era. The obverse side displays the profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, looking toward the right. She is depicted wearing an ornate, crested Attic helmet decorated with delicate olive leaves and a palmette, complemented by a simple round earring. On the reverse, her sacred companion, the owl, stands facing three-quarters to the right with its head turned directly toward the viewer. Tucked behind the owl are a crescent moon and a small sprig of olive, all framed within a deep incuse square. To the right of the owl, the bold Greek letters alpha, theta, and epsilon appear as the inscription AOE, representing the Athenian people. A notable feature of this ancient silver coin is the presence of a test cut. These deep gashes were intentionally made in antiquity by merchants or moneychangers to verify that the coin was solid silver throughout, rather than a plated counterfeit, adding a tangible layer of human history to this remarkable artifact.
