Among the most recognizable treasures of antiquity, the silver tetradrachm of Athens stands as a monument to classical design. Struck during the golden age of Greece between 440 and 404 BC, this ancient silver piece represents the height of Athenian influence. This particular specimen is preserved in Extra Fine condition, offering a remarkably clear window into the craftsmanship of the ancient world. The front of the coin features the profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, facing to the right. She is depicted wearing an elaborate, crested Attic helmet decorated with delicate olive leaves and a palmette, complemented by a simple round earring. On the reverse, her companion, the owl, stands angled three-quarters to the right with its head turned to face the viewer directly. Tucked behind the owl are a small olive sprig and a crescent moon, all framed within the traditional recessed square of the coin die. The classic Greek letters Alpha, Theta, and Epsilon are clearly visible alongside the owl. An intriguing feature of this ancient silver piece is the presence of test cuts. These deep marks were made in antiquity by merchants or bankers to verify that the coin was solid silver throughout, rather than a plated counterfeit.
