Among the most recognizable treasures of antiquity, the silver tetradrachm of Athens stands as a monument to classical design. Produced in Attica during the golden age of the city-state, roughly from 440 to 404 BC, these substantial silver pieces typically weigh between 16.5 and 17.0 grams. This specific survivor has been preserved in Very Fine condition, allowing us to appreciate the artistry of a bygone era. The front of the coin showcases the profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. Turned toward the right, her face is framed by a highly detailed, crested Attic helmet. This representation of the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare was a symbol of Athenian pride and influence throughout the Mediterranean world. On the reverse, the design shifts to Athena's sacred companion, the owl. Standing upright, the bird is accompanied by a small olive sprig and a delicate crescent moon. Alongside these symbols, the Greek letters alpha, theta, and epsilon are inscribed, representing the name of the city. This combination of imagery created an instantly recognizable emblem of Athenian identity that circulated far and wide.
