Attica, Athens Silver Tetradrachm Owl (440-404 BC) Ch XF NGC 5/4
Among the most recognizable currencies of the ancient world is the silver tetradrachm of Athens, minted in the region of Attica during the classical era between 440 and 404 BC. This particular specimen, weighing 17.19 grams, comes from the Parliament Collection and has survived the centuries in Choice Extra Fine condition, with both its strike and surface quality evaluated at a highly commendable four out of five. The front of the coin showcases the profile of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, facing to the right. Her features are framed by a crested helmet decorated with a palmette and delicate olive leaves, complemented by a simple round earring. This representation of the goddess of wisdom was a symbol of Athenian identity and influence throughout the Mediterranean. On the reverse, the design features an owl, the sacred companion of Athena, standing three-quarters to the right with its gaze turned directly toward the viewer. Tucked into the upper left corner of the recessed square is a tiny olive sprig alongside a crescent moon. To the right of the owl, the bold Greek letters A O E are clearly visible, serving as an abbreviation for the people of Athens. This classic combination of imagery captures the artistic and civic pride of one of history's greatest ancient city-states.
