During the late nineteenth century, the Austrian Mint produced a fascinating gold coin designed to facilitate trade across European borders. Struck between 1870 and 1892, this issue carries two distinct face values on its reverse: 8 Florins and 20 Francs. This dual denomination allowed the coin to align easily with the monetary standards of the Latin Monetary Union, making it a highly practical medium of international commerce. The obverse of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, surrounded by a formal Latin inscription. On the reverse, the design showcases the intricate crowned coat of arms representing the Austro-Hungarian Empire, flanked by the dual denominations and the year of manufacture. Each coin contains 0.1867 troy ounces of gold, minted with a purity of 90 percent, and survives today in average circulated condition or better.
