The British Gold Sovereign represents a major chapter in monetary history, emerging from the Great Recoinage of 1816. Introduced to take the place of the gold guinea, this coin was valued at exactly twenty shillings. Each piece contains 0.2354 troy ounces of pure gold and was produced by the Royal Mint along with various other commonwealth minting facilities. On the obverse, viewers will find the portrait of the sitting king or queen. By tradition, the direction the ruler faces on the coin alternates with each successive reign. The reverse displays the iconic image of Saint George on horseback as he triumphs over a dragon, a masterpiece created by Benedetto Pistrucci. Commissioned by William Wellesley Pole, this classic design has graced the reverse of the Sovereign since the very beginning of the series.
