This gold solidus originates from the Byzantine Empire during the reign of Emperor Constans II, who ruled from 641 to 668 AD. Also known as Constantine, he holds a unique place in imperial history as the final Roman emperor to hold the office of consul, a distinction he achieved in 642 AD. This particular specimen has survived the centuries in remarkable condition, certified as Choice Almost Uncirculated with a strike rating of 4 out of 5 and a surface rating of 3 out of 5. The obverse of this gold coin displays a forward-facing portrait of Constans II, depicted with a full beard and holding a globus cruciger, a symbol of global Christian authority.
