During the eleventh century, the Byzantine Empire produced coinage of distinctive artistry and form. This gold histamenon nomisma, minted between 1059 and 1067 AD, showcases the fascinating scyphate, or cup-shaped, design characteristic of the era's currency. Weighing approximately 4.5 grams, this gold piece offers a tactile connection to the medieval Mediterranean world.
